Health and Nutrition are a SNAP with DEPC

SNAP-Ed is the nutrition promotion and obesity prevention component of SNAP. It is not a voucher program or a program designed to increase enrollment in SNAP. It is about improving the likelihood that children and families will make healthy food and lifestyle choices that prevent obesity.

DEPC will have new resources to provide educational programs to show families how to make healthier food choices at home, at school and at child care.  The Snap-Ed grant will allow DEPC to partner with:

  • The Weeks Armstrong Housing Authority to offer families nutrition classes, food tastings and play groups.
  • Five after-school programs in the local vicinity to give technical assistance to enhance their curriculum with hands-on nutrition activities and physical health activities.
  • Food Corp and local elementary schools to teach children about food and nutrition, build and tend gardens, and help source and promote local food in school cafeterias.
  • Five local faith-based institutions to teach families how to “eat smart and move more,” through the Faithful Families curriculum.
  • GO NAP SACC in 5 child care centers and nutrition education and food tastings in three child care centers
