Come see what’s new at Discovery Park!

Thanks to a grant from PNC, there’s new art in the park!  Come see the Alphabet Tree (based on the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom) and take a stroll around the walkway to find shapes and see if you can find the butterfly!

About the Artist

Hi, I am Sarah Winters, the creator of the artistic additions to Discovery Park. I began painting watercolors as a hobby, now I create original watercolors by commission and have recently branched out to begin sidewalk art creations. DEPC through a PNC grant contracted me to create four new artistic designs for the park! I am excited to share them with the community and hope you all enjoy!

As an educator of young children in Rocky Mount for many years and a former Family Service Coordinator at DEPC. I really wanted the artistic additions to enhance the beauty of the park and to have a deeper meaning and purpose for children and their families. I am passionate about children and their families learning and making connections.

Look for Discovery Park directly across the parking lot from DEPC in the downtown area, open the iron gates of the park and you are happily welcomed with colorful waving hands inviting you in to “Play and Learn With Us!”

As you follow colored footsteps to the right you will find a fun flowering hopscotch design. A beautiful large yellow sunflower with numbered leaves to hop on. This hopscotch creation fosters number recognition, number order and increased exercise levels in young children.

Follow the paved walking track around the park to find four shape pathways to walk and balance upon. These whimsical shape patterns lend themselves to shape recognition and promote gross motor control and skill development.

After you complete the walking track loop once, rest a bit in the shade of the big alphabet tree. This vibrantly colored alphabet tree is directly under the wooden arbor before the picnic shelter. This tree was created to help increase literacy with letter recognition and a multitude of other activities can be integrated. It was inspired by the popular children’s book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.

Invite some friends and family, pack a healthy picnic snack, and help us share about fun and learning in the “best kept secret park” in Rocky Mount!
